A mason worked on the chimney at our home, resulting in the brick top being resized and top plate original top plate no longer fitting (that’s the shiny sheet metal cap at the chimney top which keeps embers from exiting and rain from entering.) It turns out this part is extremely hard to find. It’s normally sold as part of a liner kit. I tried furnace specialists, hvac parts suppliers, fireplace businesses, hardware stores, and it was looking like I might need to hire a sheet metal manufacturing company to cut and build to my size specification, which I have been told would have a steep price tag. I’m glad I tried one more fireplace business...

Guy seriously came to the rescue. Not only did he provide the part I need, he used his tools to cut and shape the part so it fit on short notice. He had an 18”x18” top plate but he cut it into the 12”x12” I need and he gave it a folded edge so it fits my chimney securely, and it uses welds to hold the chimney crown in place (the previous one used rivets) so it won’t let any rain in or let rust develop. I had been advised to do this myself with metal shears - there is no way I could have had the same results on my own. Guy talked with me about options I hadn’t considered, for example putting a small curve into the plate so rainwater rolls off and doesn’t collect and generate rust spots. Rust developed on my old one where rain runs off the crown, and in the new one the crown is oversized so rain won’t do the same thing. And the price he charged was reasonable - I hope to repay him for his work through referrals whenever fireplace needs come up in conversation.

Guy went above and beyond. He helped with my chimney needs, to the point that the masonry company was impressed and said they’ve had customers who’ve needed to special order to solve the same problem - the masonry company asked for his contact info for their own referrals!

This location is out of the way for me, I’m coming from West Seattle, but the next time I need anything fireplace related, I will be coming back to Issaquah to work with Guy again. Thompson Hearth and Home goes the extra mile to make their customers happy.”

“1/6/22 - This place is absolutely top-notch when it comes to service. About 6 years ago we purchased two gas inserts from them, both of which we use practically every day. The service from Guy and his team has always been fantastic, but just today something happened that was particularly exemplary and was what prompted me to write a review. Recently the remote on one of the units started having trouble, with some of the buttons not working properly. We looked online, hoping we could just buy a replacement. Due to the supply chain issue, no one has this remote anywhere. Finally, I thought to call Thompson’s, just to see if they might be able to get one for me. They, too, didn’t have a replacement due to the supply chain, but at first they thought they might be able to fix it for me. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to, but instead of just saying, “Oh well, we’ll order one for you and tough luck until then,” they took one of the remotes from their own floor models and lent it to me until their order for new remotes comes in. I mean, who does this? I was blown away. I would recommend (and have recommended) this company to all my friends and family.”

“11/19/19 - Service before the sale is common. Service after the sale, especially a fair amount of time after the sale, is unheard of now days. Thompsons offerd both exceptionally well! We went to several fireplace stores and not one had the selection, knowledge, or ideas the people at Thompsons did. Their prices were in line with all other’s as well. Installation was a breeze with kind and professional young men that clearly knew their stuff. Now jump forward 4 years and we’ve had two beautiful fireplaces working perfectly. Until about a month ago. As the weather turned cold we decided to use the fireplace. One started no problem but we couldn’t get the second to light. We tried everything to no avail. Then I called Thompsons. Their answering message states for service call another company (they aren’t in the chimney sweeping biz nor general fireplace maintenance biz). However I waited and finally got ahold of Guy Thompson. I explained what was going on and he offered some ideas. After several phone calls of him offering ideas and suggestions that didn’t work, he said he’d come out and take a look. Jump forward to today and either Guy or one of his employees has come out several times and finally figured out there was a simple issue and fixed it. I offered to pay but they refused stating they pride themselves on their attitude towards their customers and on their products. Now both my fireplaces work great and we couldn’t be happier. The point of all my rambling is that these guys are true professionals with service after the sale (awhile after the sale) that is so lacking now days and by all means not something you’d get online or at the big box stores!! “4/25/19 - I walked in and the owner Guy showed me their options for a zero-clearance fireplace insert. He used very low pressure - no pushy sales job at all. He explained options and gave me the model brochures.

I called back later and placed my order. Guy was fine with me sending the deposit by check using bank bill pay. He sent an installer to do the measurements, who was on time and friendly. We got their recommended electrician to install the outlet, which went smoothly. Then the installation team arrived exactly on time and got the job done perfectly.

I’m aware that their installation service area is smaller during busy season - Guy was willing to install at my address because I was ordering during off season (spring). If you live farther away from Issaquah, you should first check that they’ll install at your location.

“10/29/18 - About 8 years ago, we bought a display model from Thomson’s Hearth & Home. They gave a good deal because it was a display model and also because the unit was sized for an older, larger fireplace, which are less common. We love the fireplace and it’s saved us a few times when the power went out.

Now, after all this time, I had an issue that cropped up after cleaning it; the pilot light would not stay lit. I followed the instructions left by the installer, but that didn’t help. We called Thompson’s and Guy answered the phone. I described the issue and Guy walked me through the process to fix the issue. He was very patient and took the time to explain what the issue was and why it occurred. After hanging up, I followed his advice and it WORKED like charm.

They oversaw ordering and installing beautiful hand crafted doors for our newly constructed home’s large double sided fireplace and for an outdoor fireplace. Two other places in the Seattle area carried the same shelf, one was too far from us, the other had a form that appeared to be created by the manufacturer, but had higher prices than Thompson’s Hearth & Home for the exact same thing. “2/6/16 - The owner spent time with my wife and I discussing all of the options for our fireplace insert in his showroom. We selected the largest possible gas insert given our existing wood-burning fireplace dimensions and the owner came out to the house the same day to confirm measurements. The date of installation was scheduled one month out from the purchase date. Installers arrived on time and did a nice job routing the gas line 20 feet to the fireplace. However, the installation team did not think the insert would fit and referred us back to the shop to choose a smaller option. Feeling disappointed, we went back to the shop the same afternoon and discussed our purchase with the owner. Trusting his original measurements, he immediately contacted his most experienced installation team and asked them to come back the next day to complete the installation. They arrived on time and did a fabulous job of installing our original insert choice. The quality of the installation is beautiful and appears as if it was designed for the home. The gas fireplace adds warmth to a basement room that was previously uncomfortably cool during the winter months. Now the temperature is perfectly regulated and the ambience is fabulous. We definitely recommend Thompson’s Hearth and Home to anyone looking for a quality professional installation with great customer service at a fair price.”

We had a few minor problems arise during installation that Thompsons efficiently and good-naturedly fixed right away. The first was that there was a fuse which blew on installation. They fixed the fuse, but after it blew again the owner himself drove out to my house to bring a completely different unit to replace the first one. All of this happened within just a few hour and I really appreciated their attention to remedying the problem promptly. This was not at all related to anything Thompsons did and was entirely a factor of the pipes being old. However, the guys were able to put in new, updated piping for us to fix that. Even though it was clear they were not going to get any business from us they spent a great deal of time showing us options and discussing or rather complicated install situation. If they spent that much time with us I am sure they would also provide outstanding service for customers in the area. If you are looking for a stove or fireplace you should definitely stop in. We live almost 300 miles away and it was well worth our time!”

“7/3/14 - We purchased the large Big Green Egg a few years ago from Guy. We had to warranty a part and he was helpful with the paperwork. The store has a great selection of BGE inventory and accessories, so we were able to find all the needed parts. We decided to go back this summer and purchase a mini BGE to take with us when we go camping. We asked Guy if he could make a carrier for it, for easier transportation. The first one was slightly too narrow based on the measurements we took. He worked on the measurements again, and the new carrier holds the mini perfectly. It’s actually better than what we imagined. Based on his professional, honest, helpful service over the years, I would recommend this store for both fireplace and BGE products and services.”

“6/10/14 - Purchased a new gas insert fireplace. Thompson’s installed the new gas insert , removed the old wood burning stove, replaced the chimney vents and installed new gas lines.

We also received a free vent kit with purchase. It took about 3 weeks between order date and install. Chad and Christian Vandouris completed the install and did an excellent job. Very professional and fast. Left the place very clean and the new gas lines are great.

After installing the fireplace, I noticed and shroud had a blemish in the paint. I took it back to Guy and he gave me a brand new replacement on the spot. Excellent service and extremely responsive. Can’t recommend Thompson’s enough - they are great!”

“5/28/14 - We visited 3 fireplace shops on Eastside. We were most impressed with Guy at this shop. He was obviously very knowledgeable and informative. We were looking for insert to replace our gas fireplace. When choosing Guy and Nicole pointed us to the one they thought had best fire for our size. We are our new insert for first time and it is beautiful, cozy, and warm. Has great logs and fire. They installed it today and took old one away to be recicyled.

“3/14/14 - We purchased a gas fireplace from Guy about 18 months ago and he made it very easy to decide to buy from him. He did everything I asked to make it easier for me to get the fireplace I wanted after he educated me about which fireplace was best for me.
We had 2 different “minor” issues that were manufacturer issues, nothing terrible and nothing to do with the installation.
In both cases Guy was very quick and courteous to help me get my fireplace fixed.
I’m about an hour south of his store but I bought from him because I felt he know what customer service is and he does! I could have paid the same price locally but I’m really glad I decided to call around and we have been very pleased with our purchase thanks to Guy.”

“2/22/14 - We wanted to convert both of our home’s unused wood burning fireplaces into more efficient gas inserts. We visited multiple dealer showrooms and quickly became overwhelmed by the choices in options, aesthetics, efficiency, and prices.

Thompson’s helped make the process easier by pre-selecting for their showroom only models that meet high standards for efficiency and features (all their showroom units qualify for PSE efficiency rebates). That then made it easy to focus a decision mainly on aesthetics and pricing. We ended up purchasing both units there, a more traditional R.H. Peterson insert and a more modern looking glass lined Kozy Heat insert.

It took four weeks from the purchase date to install date. The install itself went smoothly with the two installers working together and had everything looking good and working well in a four hours. There was an issue with the fuse in one of our units, and the store’s technician Max came out the next day to make the fix and had it working again.

Overall we are very happy with our purchase. They look great and produce a tremendous amount of heat making our living room very warm and comfortable.

Gas inserts are not cheap so I suggest you shop around but be sure to visit Thompson’s when you do.”

“2/9/14 - We picked up a Big Green Egg, BBQ Guru, an amazing Challenger Cart, and all the extras and goodies to get cooking on the Big Green Egg from Guy. My husband has always been a charcoal nut, and has gone through several different BBQ’s. Now it was time to step up and buy the egg. Not only did Thompson’s offer delivery and setup of the egg, but they even spent a great deal of time getting us used to our new grill.

The first time we fired it up we cooked a perfect steak, and from Guy’s recommendation, we smoked a brisket for 17 hours without having to open the lid and were rewarded with the most delicious and juicy brisket we have ever had.

Three years ago we bought our first gas fireplace at their store, and Nicole was extremely helpful with making sure we found the right one - we still love it, and we are getting lots of compliments for it :)
A year later we upgraded our open fireplace with an insert. Guy was incredibly patient about going through all the different possibilities with us. We finally found the perfect solution, and have since enjoyed countless happy hours in front of our new fireplace. Even the chimney sweeper commented on how great this stove was, and only charged us for a regular ‘open fireplace’ cleaning (instead of ‘insert cleaning’), since it was so easy to do.

After three years of faithful service to us, our gas fireplace started having some trouble and would not stay lit. I called Thompson’s Hearth & Home, expecting to make an appointment for someone to come out and look at it in the next few weeks. I was very surprised when they said a technician would come out that very same day. It turned out the technician was held up with a different customer, so Guy came over himself and didn’t leave until the problem was fixed, which was around 8pm in the evening! I have never experienced such amazing customer service!
Needless to say, we had no further issues with the gas fireplace, it works like a charm. We were so grateful, especially since we lost power 2 days later, and the gas fireplace kept us warm and cozy.

“7/03/13 - We had a gas insert installed in our home in 1994 which had pretty continuous use over the last 20 years but it finally “pooped out.” Thompson’s came last year and repaired it, but at the time told us that it was probably on it’s last legs, which didn’t shock us. They came out again this year for another repair and told us it probably wasn’t worth repairing at this point. We were not surprised—the first one gave us a good run, but it was time. Max, their technician, was not at all high pressure about it, and we completely trusted his opinion on the state of the old fireplace.
We went in to Thompsons and picked out our new fireplace and they were here to install it in less than two weeks. (It would have been one week but we couldn’t do it earlier. Great service!) It took roughly two and a half hours to install, and it looks great! We can’t say enough nice things about their technician Max. He’s just an exceptional, and exceptionally nice, technician. And he REALLY knows his stuff! We were very confident with him, and with the install, and are very happy with our fireplace.
We definitely recommend Thompson’s highly. We had one minor issue pop up after the install, reached Guy (the owner) on the phone, and they were out that same day and made everything perfect. Great company to work with, and just overall a very good experience.”

“6/19/13 - After a truly bad experience with a multiple location Puget Sound area Fireplace shop, in which they had no idea how to get the fireplace insert they sold us to work, we traveled to nearly all the remaining shops in the metro area to find another gas insert. I wish we had gone to Thompson’s first, it would have saved us a ton of trouble. As the other reviews show the service is outstanding at Thompson’s, however for us the fact that they truly know their product inside and out (and their competitors) made all the difference. Our install presented a challenge with the venting and Guy and company figured it out and corrected it immediately, they were at my house within hours after my call. Max, Thompson’s technician was a master at getting everything set up and working great. He adjusted the flames perfectly as well as went out of his way to paint the roof vent to match other roof vents, he also touched up another vent that had some peeling paint, who does that? And, we also learned from our travels to all those Fireplace shops that Thompson’s prices are right in line with everybody else.

We found exactly what we had been looking for and they delivered and installed a liitle bit earlier than they promised. The installation was professionally completed. After it was installed I realized that the price was the same as other retailers carrying the same product and based on how the unit worked was well worth it.
